News in vaccination against pneumococcal disease

Summary
Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important and common cause of serious illnesses in all age groups, especially in the extremes of age. Vaccination is the most important measure in prevention of pneumococcal diseases in all people, particularly those within certain risk groups. This paper reviews epidemiology of pneumococcal disease, current practices in vaccination with pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and pneumococcal polysaccharride vaccine (PPSV), and information on newly available 20-valent conjugated vaccine.
The paperrecommends the sequence and choice of vaccine based on age and belonging to a particular risk group.
