Professor Zdenko Sonicki, MD, PhD,
Born in Zagreb, where he completed elementary school, and high school of mathematics and informatics. Graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, where he also obtained MSc degree in 1994, and PhD in 2002.
Attended Summer institute for statistical genetics at Washington University, USA, in 2007. In 2013 appointed to scientific grade of scientific advisor.
Internship and research fellow at the University Hospital Centre Sisters of Mercy 1989-1992. Since 1992 employed at the Department of medical statistics, epidemiology and medical informatics, Andrija Štampar School of Public Health. Since 2017 full professor at the same Department, scientific field Biomedicine and health, Public health and and health care, for the subject Medical statistics. Leader and co-leader of eight subjects in scientific doctoral studies. Participates in undergraduate teaching, and teaching in doctoral studies.
Participated in the international program of travel teaching, for interdisciplinary student group from the University of Georgia, USA, and local mentor to American students. Visiting scientist and invited lecturer at the University of Georgia, USA, and Medical University of South Carolina, USA. Participated in organization of several international scientific meetings. Participated in the ERASMUS+ program on teaching staff mobility at the University of Haifa in Israel.
Participated in several scientific and technological projects financed by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, and headed the project Predictive models in healthcare. Participated in international project Fouille de données intelligente pour l’aide à la décision avec applications en médecine, financed by EGIDE, France. Acted as a temporaray advisor of the World Health Organization on the projects Development of a clinical prediction instrument and randomised trial of intramuscular vs oral antibiotics for the treatment of Group A Beta Haemolitic Streptococcal pharyngitis in children (GRASP, TOPS), and Clinical predictors of severity of accidental poisoning from hydrocarbons, organophosphates and carbamates in children below five years old. Participant in ERASMUS+ project KyrMedu – Advancing University Education in Biomedical Engineering and Health Management in Kyrgyzstan.
Member of the international committee for dissertations at the University of Barcelona, Spain. Chair ot the EFMI Working group Information and Decision Support in Biomedicine and Health Care – IdeS.
Presenter of several papers at international scientific meetings, author or co-author of 156 published professional and scientific papers, out of which 54 published in journals indexed in Current Contents, with 912 citations (WoS) and h-index 15 (WoS). Mentor of five Phd thesis. Member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals : Central European Journal of Paediatrics, Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Science, Pediatrics Today, Acta Medica Academica, and Croatian Medical Journal (of which he is also a reviewer).
President of the Croatian Biometric Society, and vice-president of the Croatian Association for Medical Informatics.
