Body image importance refers to the importance that a person places on his/her physical appearance and along with the body dissatisfaction, that represents a person’s negative evaluation of her or his own body, is a strong risk factor for eating disorders. The aim of this study was to determine gender differences, as well as the differences between girls and boys in early and late adolescence in body dissatisfaction and body image importance. 1056 elementary and high school students aged 10 to 19 filled in the modified Body Image and Body Change Questionnaire (McCabe & Ricciardelli, 2002). Levels of body dissatisfaction and dissatisfaction with different body aspects are generally higher in girls than boys and in late than in early adolescence in both sexes. Body image is more important to boys in early and to girls in late adolescence, whereas muscle strength and size is more important to boys in both early and late adolescence.
